Here they are described in two ways. A rivet is described by its shank diameter, length, and head type. But the counter sink is such a rivet, whose head is also added to the length.
Their description is as follows-
1. Based on shape
They are of the following types on the basis of their shape-
These types of rivets have a solid shank, so they are called solid rivets. And being solid, they are stronger or more powerful than other types of rivets. They are used for common tasks.
These types of rivets have a hollow shank. And they are not very strong. And they are used in shoe making holes for casings and file covers etc.
(iii) bi-branched rivet
The shank of these types of rivets is divided into two parts, hence they are called bi-branched rivets. They are separated during use. They are used in light works like:- hand bags and briefcases etc.
2. at the base of the head
These are of the following types on the basis of head-
(i) Cone Head Rivet
The head of this rivet is 2D in diameter and 0.75D in height. Its head is cone shaped. It is used for light assembly works.
(ii) Cup or Snap Head Rivet
The head diameter of this rivet is 1.6D and the height is 0.7D. Its head is of semi-round shape. This is the most commonly used rivet. It is used in structural works like fabrication, bridge etc.
(iii)Counter Sunk Head Rivet
The diameter of the head of this rivet is 2D and the height is 0.5D. Its head comes in many angles. It is of 90° angle in standard. And it is used for joining thin sheets of 120°. They are used for fabrication works. And at the time of riveting, its tail is made in the shape of counter sink head or snap head.
(iv) Flat Head Rivet
The diameter of the head of this rivet is 2D and the height is 0.25D. It is used to join thin sheets or plates. These are made of soft metals like:- mild steel, aluminum, brass etc.
(v) Pan Head Rivet
The head diameter of this rivet is 1.6D and the height is 0.7D. Its head is stronger. Therefore it is used in construction works like: – Boiler, Guarder Engine etc. And at the time of riveting, its tail is made in the shape of a cup or a snap head.
(vi) Elliptical Head Rivet
The diameter of the head of this rivet is 1.6D and the height is 0.6D. Its head is of ellipsoid or ellipsoid shape. It is used in boilers.
(vii) Mushroom Head Rivet
The head height of this rivet is 0.5D. It is used at that time, when we do not have to keep the head above the metal surface or the surface of the sheet or plate, then it is used.
(viii)Bifercated Rivet Head
It is used for very light works. Its use is bifurcated Part Tin plate is used for joining plastics, leather etc.
