Anodizing is an electrochemical process in which a metal surface is converted into a durable anti-corrosion and anodic oxide. Aluminum is the most suitable metal for this process. Other non-ferrous metals like magnesium, titanium etc. can also be used in this. This process can be understood as follows.

What is cathodic protection?

Cathodic protection is a process in which the corrosion of a metal surface is controlled. It is mainly used to protect steel, water or fuel pipelines, storage tanks, etc. Cathodic protection is done in two ways.

Galvanic or Sacrificial Anode

In this type of system, reactive metals are used as auxiliary anodes which are connected to the steel to be protected. Due to the difference in potential between the anode and cathode, current flows in the solution. Thus the steel surface becomes more negative and acts as a cathode. For the sacrificial anode a capacitor is used an aluminum, zinc and magnesium metal.

Impressed Current

In this type of system, inert or zero or low solution anode is applied and DC supply or rectified AC supply is used to impress the current from external anode to the cathode surface.
