Briefly explain the causes of the barricade movement in England.

Although farm fencing in England had begun in the 16th century, the process accelerated in the late 18th century. The following reasons were mainly responsible for this-

1- Increasing demand for wool-

In the 16th century, when there was a huge increase in the wool prices in the world market, the rich farmers and landowners thought of making more profit by increasing the production of wool. For this he was keen to improve the breed of sheep. He started fencing open fields to provide better pasture for the sheep.

2-Different Laws-

Although 60 lakh hectares of land had been fenced by 1850 AD, it was not yet supported by the state or the church. Therefore, 4000 such laws were passed in the British Parliament, according to which Bandabandi Kuwait was called. This gave a boost to the Badabandi movement.

3- Rapid increase in population-

The population of England grew rapidly between the 18th and 19th centuries. It quadrupled between 1750 and 19100, increasing the demand for food grains and other products. Therefore, due to the increase in population, the pressure on the land increased, due to which the people were left with no other option but to fence the open fields.

4- Increase in the demand for cereals-

Due to the war with France and the increase in population, there was a shortage of food grains in England. This increased the demand for food grains. Thus the zamindars were encouraged to increase the area under cultivation of food grains by fencing open fields.

5-The use of machines-

When the demand for food grains increased very rapidly, the rich people started using machines. These machines required large farms. Therefore, the rich zamindars barricaded more and more open fields. This was a good opportunity for the wealthy landlords to earn more profit by increasing the production of food grains.
