What is stereo isomerism?

isomerism

Two or more compounds having the same formula and molecular weight but different in structure or arrangement of atoms in three dimensions are called isomers and this phenomenon is called isomerism. There are two types of isomerism.

what is stereo isomerism

1.Structure isomerism

(a) series isomerismThose compounds which have the same formula and the same molecular weight but different chain lengths of carbon atoms are called chain isomerism.

(b) position isomerismThose compounds which have the same formula and the same molecular weight but without the position of the functional group are called position isomerism.

(c) functional isomerism-Those compounds which have the same formula and the same molecular weight but different functional groups are called functional group isomers.

(d) Intermediate- This isomerism is found in compounds in which the functional group is located in the middle of the carbon chain, it is called intermediate.

(m) steerability-This isomerism is found in those compounds, which have two functional groups living in dynamic equilibrium, it is called Chalavayavata.

2. Stereoscopic isomerism

Two or more compounds which have the same formula and molecular weight but have different arrangement of atoms in three dimensions are called three-dimensional isomers.

(a) configurable isomer– In this isomerism, the bond has to be broken to change one configuration to another. This isomerism requires more energy.

(b) configuration isomers– In this isomerism, the band is rotated to change one configuration to another. In which less energy is required.
