What is Vernier Caliper? its uses

vernier caliper in hindi:- “The microscopic instrument by which the outer diameter, inner diameter and depth of a job are measured, is called Vernier caliper says.”

What is a Vernier Caliper?

Its main parts are as follows-

1.Vernier scale

This is the most important part of the Vernier Caliper, with the help of which the measurement is done with precision. In this, the marks of the metric system are made in the lower side and the British system in the upper side. In this, the part used to measure the outer diameter is called the jaw and the part used to measure the inner diameter is called the nib.
The movable jaw and movable nib are attached to this scale. A depth rod is attached to this scale to measure depth. It has a locking screw at the top. And on its side there is a fine adjusting screw at the bottom.

2.Main Scale

This part of the vernier caliper is also known as the beam. Metric and British system marks are made on this part, similar to the steel rule. From this part there is a fixed jaw for taking external measurement and fixed nib for taking internal measurement. And a groove is made in its back side. To measure the depth in this groove, a depth rod is lying.

3. Movable and fixed jaw

This part is used to measure the outer diameter of a job.

4. Movable and fixed nibs

This part is used to measure the inner diameter of a slot made in a job or to measure the width of a slot.

5.Locking Screw

This part locks the Vernier scale. When measuring a job, removing the job with the jaws or nib may cause the vernier caliper to move, causing an accurate reading. Therefore, after measuring the job, lock it immediately. Due to which the vernier scale is locked, and the reading is obtained accurate or accurate. This screw is drilled.

6.fine adjustment screw

This part is also called thumb screw, because it is driven or operated with the thumb of the hand. Very fine measurements are adjusted with this screw. Which gives accurate measurement. The Vernier scale is easily moved back and forth by this part. This screw is drilled.

7.Depth Rod

This part is used to measure the depth of a slot in a job. This rod is attached to the Vernier scale. Through this, depth can also be measured in both the metric system and the British system.

(A)Metric Method

1. In which Vernier caliper marks 0.5 mm and 1 mm are made on the main scale-

Of these, 12 parts of one mm on the main scale and 24 parts of 0.5 mm are equal to 25 parts of the Vernier scale.
After this, the value of one part of the main scale and one part of the Vernier scale is calculated.
One part of the main scale has a value of 0.5 mm.
The value of one column of the Vernier scale is calculated as follows:
25 parts of vernier scale = 12 parts of main scale
Value of one part of Vernier scale = 12/25 = 0.48 mm

Least count = Value of one part of main scale – Value of one part of Vernier scale

Least count = 0.5 – 0.48 = 0.02 mm

2. In the vernier caliper whose main scale is marked with one mm, 49 parts of the main scale are equal to 50 parts of the vernier scale, in them the least count is calculated as follows-

After this, the value of one part of the main scale and one part of the Vernier scale is calculated.
One part of the main scale has a value of 1 mm.
The value of one column of the Vernier scale is calculated as follows:
50 parts of vernier scale = 49 parts of main scale
Value of one part of Vernier scale = 49/50 = 0.98 mm

Least count = Value of one part of main scale – Value of one part of Vernier scale

Least count = 1.00 – 0.98 = 0.02 mm

(B) British method

The least count of the vernier caliper whose main scale is divided into 25 parts on the vernier scale is divided as follows-

In this method of vernier caliper, the main scale is divided into inches, in which one inch is divided into 10 equal parts, and this one part is divided into four equal sections. Then the total section becomes 40.
Therefore, the value of one part of the main scale is 1/40 inch or 0.025″.
Similarly 24 parts of main scale = 24 × 1″/40 = 24″/40
Now the value of 25 part of Vernier scale = 24 part of main scale
Vernier Value of one part of Vernier scale = 24/40×25 = 24/1,000 = 0.024″
Therefore, the value of one part of the vernier scale = 0.024″

Least count = Value of one part of main scale – Value of one part of Vernier scale

Least count = 0.025″ – 0.024″ = 0.001″

Uses of Vernier Caliper

In the technical world, it is used for the following tasks.

  1. In checking the required part size while fitting.
  2. In checking the outer diameter of a shaft.
  3. To check inner diameter of hollow shaft or bearing.
  4. In checking blind bore depth.
  5. In the practical given in the workshop, the length of the job can also be measured in accuracy.
  6. Measuring the diameter of the drilled hole in the job.
  7. Measuring the depth of the hole drilled closed in the job.

Vernier Caliper Precautions

The following points should be kept in mind while using Vernier Caliper. Which are as follows-

  1. Zero error must be checked before using it.
  2. It should never be mixed with cutting tools and hand tools. Otherwise its subtlety will be lost.
  3. While doing turning or other operations on the lathe machine, the size of the job should be checked by stopping the machine.
  4. The check should not be done while the machine is running. This will wear out the jaws of the job.
  5. It should be caught carefully. It should not get out of hand again and again. Because due to falling, a slight scratch or twist in its part will end the subtlety.
  6. It should never be used for thumping.
  7. Its depth rod should never be used as a handle.
